Which wooden magnetic knife holders mount on a wall, and how do they fix there?
Woodsea makes four wall-mounted wooden magnetic knife holders, three in oak and one in walnut. Each is 2 cm thick, each carries hidden magnets, and each fixes to the wall with 3M VHB double-sided adhesive tape. No drilling is required.
The Hold my knife holder comes in two lengths of oak. Small is 40 cm at 49.99 EUR. Medium is the same holder at 60 cm, 72.50 EUR. The End grain holder is 45 cm, in end-grain oak at 65.99 EUR or end-grain walnut at 79.19 EUR, reduced from 74.99 and 89.99 EUR.
The 60 cm Hold my knife is the cheapest wall centimetre Woodsea sells. The End grain holder is shorter and costs more, because you are buying the end-grain face, and it is the only walnut on the wall.
Woodsea says the Hold my knife holder takes scissors and bottle openers as well as knives. Every holder in the range is finished food safe.
For how many knives fit, allow about 5 cm each, which is a handle plus the gap that stops handles knocking together. That is eight on the 40 cm holder and twelve on the 60 cm one. Wide chef knives take more than their 5 cm, so count on seven and eleven if most of your knives are big.
The magnets do not blunt anything, because a knife goes on flat, resting on the side of the blade.
Measure the run of wall before you order, because adhesive tape sets the holder where you first press it. 3M publishes what its VHB tape wants. Wipe the surface with a half and half mix of isopropyl alcohol and water, in one direction, and let it dry. Fit it in a warm room, above 10 degrees and better above 21. Press hard along the whole strip.
Then leave it alone. The bond reaches about half its strength in twenty minutes, ninety per cent after a day and full strength after three. Hang the knives on the fourth day.
The tape is made for glass, metal and painted surfaces. Glazed tile is the easy case. Painted plaster usually works, and the paint decides it more than the tape does. 3M says porous materials like wood, board and cement have to be sealed with paint or varnish first. On bare plaster or wallpaper the wall surface gives way before the tape does.
If you do not know which kind of wall you have, the tape itself will tell you. Press a piece of ordinary masking tape hard onto the spot, leave it an hour, then pull it off fast. If paint or plaster dust comes away with it, your wall will not hold a loaded holder.
The tape is meant to stay. If you rent and want the wall as you found it when you leave, buy the block instead. The block on the worktop is the answer in that kitchen, and it needs no wall at all.

When is a knife block on the worktop the better buy?
A knife block is the better buy when you have worktop space to spare and no clear stretch of wall. Woodsea's Block knife holder is a freestanding wooden block that holds knives flat against its outside faces, on neodymium magnets set under the surface. The block stands 25 cm, so a long chef knife sits with its handle above the top.
The small Block takes 13 by 8 cm of worktop and stands 25 cm tall: 99.99 EUR in oak, 114.99 EUR in walnut. The medium Block takes 15.5 by 12 cm at the same height: 124.99 EUR in oak, 149.99 EUR in walnut.
Knives go on its two broad faces. On the same 5 cm per knife, that is about five on the small block and six on the medium. The wall strips take eight and twelve. So a block holds fewer knives than a wall strip costing half as much. What you get back is a bare wall.

Keep it dry and keep it oiled. Wipe the wood with mild soap and warm water when it needs cleaning, then dry it at once with a towel. Never soak it and never put it in a dishwasher. Once a month, work food-grade mineral oil or a board oil into every surface. Let it sit for several hours, then wipe off whatever has not soaked in.
Do magnets damage a knife edge?
No. On a magnetic holder the knife rests on the side of the blade, flat against the wood. The edge never touches the magnet. What blunts a knife on a magnetic strip is dragging it sideways off the magnets. Lift it away from the wood instead of sliding it, and dry the blade before it goes back up.
